Beard Oil or Beard Balm? The 5 Essential Questions!

Huile ou baume à barbe ? Les 5 questions pour faire le bon choix — Guide québécois

Finally got the beard of your dreams? Check!

Now you're wondering: How do I take care of it and protect it from the elements?

Should I use wax? Oil? Hairspray?

We have the perfect guide to help you choose!

1. Exposure to the elements?

If you find that your beard hairs are brittle in winter, that's perfectly normal.

In Quebec, it's freezing! In winter, the skin naturally produces less oil and the beard tends to dry out. Even the French are concerned about it, and let's be honest, their winters are nothing like ours!

It may not answer the original question, but in winter, unless you have particularly active skin, it's worth using oil to moisturize the skin and balm to protect the hair.

2. Skin or hair?

If your priority is the skin under your beard (itching, tightness, dandruff), oil is your best ally.

If you mainly want to nourish and structure the hair, balm takes over.

3. Long beard or short beard?

Long beards, let's be honest, they require a little more work. Normally, the skin has gotten used to the hair. Goodbye itching and cracking skin. Natural oils have adjusted and comfort is there. We can't even imagine ourselves without our beard anymore. However, without hair care, we risk seeing the health of our beard decline.

That's why we prioritize balm.

If you wear a short beard, or if you are growing it out, discomfort is often the primary problem.

In this case, we prioritize oil!

Short = oil to keep it supple and clean.
Long = balm to tame, moisturize and give a nice shape.

4. Hydration or hold?

Oil = deep hydration, natural finish.
Balm = light hold, frizz control and a more polished look.

5. Dry or sensitive face skin?

Does your skin feel like a tomato left to dry under the scorching midday sun? Oil will help your skin support its natural hydration! It penetrates better and soothes instantly.

If your skin is more sensitive to oils, and requires a drier environment to stay healthy, it may be better to prioritize a good cleansing routine followed by a restricted application of beard balm to protect the hair.
